Achievement is placing a map into accomplishment with a perfect time frame and getting that achievement. It may take a number of tries to accomplish these goals but never give in. We could compute or describe victory in a lot of ways, depending on who we ask. Employee Accountability – When to Cut the Cord

 

In our current uncertain times we are now faced with the economic downturn affecting nearly everyone. The potential for losing our jobs can be psychologically and economically devastating. Uncertainty and instability can create unneeded turmoil.

The number one cause for termination usually is accredited to inferior work performance. Policies and procedures should be clearly outlined and the employee should review this information periodically to help safeguard them from an unexpected departure.

Dedication to your position and improving your skills will assure a more solid foundation within the organization. Be attentive and willing to learn. Asking for help shows perseverance to your superiors.

The manner in which you conduct yourself greatly affects your production and the production of those around you. A difficult or standoffish attitude tends to diminish overall team spirit. Negativity is not usually welcome in the workplace.

If it is a consistent practice for an employee to not show up for work or to be tardy, then these are clear indications to an employer that this person has a resentful, unwilling thought process. Again, not a characteristic of an ideal employee.

As a person managing others, it’s important to set reasonable expectations for those within your group. A company manual that outlines these expectations will be helpful to all concerned. Heading off the problem before it begins is a great start.

When faced with the difficulty of delivering the bad news, be sympathetic but professional. The discussion should be held in a quiet place, preferably without onlookers. Share with the employee the areas in which they lacked in an effort to help them understand the situation.

As a leader, you too should gain something from your encounter. Something as simple as a monthly meeting in the conference room may allow some additional input which could help prevent the same situation from happening again.

Entrepreneurs, Independent Contractors, Small and Large Businesses Must Plan and Set Goals

 

Any new business entity must have an established business plan as well as a concrete set of goals. Along with The Company Mission Statement, goal setting and planning are essential to the core of any business. Management and employees alike must be on the same page to insure continuity.

Some of the most profitable companies are susceptible to failure. There will always be competition. We need to always be aware and proactive to constant change for continued growth. We have seen many companies fail after years in the business. One of the main reasons for their failure was the ability to change with the times. Setting goals and planning ahead will keep us to the forefront.

The old adage ‘to fail to plan is to plan to fail” rings true. There are many myths in life as well as business that some use today to avoid setting goals and plan. The following are several that more than likely we all have used or at least thought of.

IT’S NOT REALLY THAT IMPORTANT! Just thinking you know what needs to be done isn’t enough. What worked last year isn’t a given this year. If you and your team are not working on next year’s plan today, it may be too late for next year. Working towards next year’s goals should always begin today.

If I know what needs to be accomplished, I don’t need to put it in writing. There is no such thing as an “unwritten” goal. Goal setting and planning needs to have a charted course and written on paper with a beginning and an ending date. Written goals will also entice your employees and give them the confidence they will need to contribute to the company’s success.

I wrote down my goals, so therefore I will now be successful. It is more entailed than just writing your goals down. They require further execution, management and harmonization. Rest assured Donald Trump, Warren Buffett or Bill Gates acted upon their written goal setting and planning.

Reviewing my goals once or twice a year should be sufficient. Reviewing your goals too frequently is only going to have a more positive effect. With the constant changing of the economy and the challenges we face almost daily, will require readdressing your goals and plans regularly for the future. This acclimatization will almost reassure the life of the company.

As we approach another new year, it will be important to consider our established goals and reset them; either to meet increased production, or even to downsize if necessary. A well thought out business plan and appropriate goal setting will make navigating the stormy business seas less perilous. Keeping a constant vigil on that plan and its course will allow you to make necessary and profitable changes during the year, and not waiting for the New Year.

The Principles of Winning

 

The philosophy of triumph in business are not any different than winning on the football field. Vince Lombardi of the Green Bay Packers, a Hall of Fame coach, had such a strong belief about winning, that many of his principles are practiced and taught in the business industry throughout the world.

Vince’s absent has been forty years but his attitude and viewpoints are relevant in today’s society and business practices. He was also famous for many coined quotes of his era, and these phrases are pertinent in business, politics and sports today.

“It’s not whether you get knocked down, it’s whether you get up”- Life has many challenges and there will be times you will fail but don’t give up. No matter how many times you get knocked down, dust yourself off, get up and keep pushing forward. Out of respect for your peers always be early. Vince would say “be 10-15 minutes early or you are late”. If you can maintain punctuality, you will be taking one of the first steps to success.

If you are a business manager or team leader and demonstrate confidence, it will always shine through. Lombardi once said “Confidence is Contagious – So is lack of Confidence”. By exhibiting confidence and an up spirit will flow out to others around you. The same results will also occur if you lack confidence. Others will truly follow a manager or leader.

PERFECTION IS NOT ATTAINABLE, BUT IF WE CHASE PERFECTION WE CAN CATCH EXCELLENCE – Setting goals that are easily reached only guarantees mediocrity, whether in business or sports. Setting lofty goals and aspirations, and honestly striving towards them, may not make you the best, but you will become one of the best.

Here is one of my favorites. “SUCCESS only comes before WORK in the dictionary”. It will require had work, dedication and motivation to become successful. The Packers had a play called “The Lombardi Sweep”. Every team knew when it was coming at them, but their defenses couldn’t stop them. The hard work and continued practice to be perfect will always be a winner.

If you are okay with being mediocre, then you will probably be mediocre. If your thought process is to just be “okay” then “okay” will become a habit. Lombardi said it best when quoted, “If winning isn’t EVERYTHING, then why do we keep score?” If your goals and aspirations aren’t to be the best, then you can probably plan on coming in second place.

Forty years later and Lombardi’s truisms are practiced throughout the world. Live these philosophies of winning and put forth that hard work, determination and beliefs that you will be the best and your success and achievements in life will explode you to the top.

Strategize Your Investment Before Investing in Your Strategies

 

Many investors and vacation homeowners purchase homes with the intention of leasing them either full-time or seasonally. But what if you were told that you were prohibited from using the property as a rental? It happens more often than you’d think.

In Arizona for example, most communities built after’90 are in master planned communities and have Homeowners Associations in place. Also called HOA’s, these associations have rules and restrictions known as Covenants, Conditions … Restrictions (CC…R’s). These rules are specific as to how the homeowner may alter or use the land and the property.

These CC…R’s are provided to you prior to purchasing the home and should be read carefully. Usually anything that can be seen from outside can be controlled by the HOA. A bench in the front entry or even window coverings is two good examples. The HOA rules can regulate what plants and trees are allowed in your yard, the paint color of your home and even if you are allowed to lease your home. Some buyers request specifically from their real estate agent, to see only homes in non-HOA communities but these types of developments are far and few between.

During the real estate boom, many builders and HOA’s began improvising and changing their rules to include if your home could be used as a rental. Or the rules stated how long you had to occupy the residence before renting to someone else. At first, renting the property might have been the furthest thing from our minds, but in today’s current market many of us have had no other choice but to consider renting our homes out. When we first closed escrow on our homes we agreed to follow the CC…R’s.

In a normal housing market, rentals have always been considered to be in areas that have a higher crime rate or in an area where property values are low. This is not the case especially in today’s economy. There are so many reasons today why property values are declining. Foreclosures and bank-owned homes are now attributed to this cause as well.

Is renting our homes today an option? This is a good question. Many HOA’s are trying to amend their CC…R’s to prevent rentals in the community. Where does that leave us? Do we have any leverage or authority in the HOA’s? Can they make these changes without our approval?

When we agreed and signed the purchase agreement on the home, we also agreed to abide by the Homeowners Association Rules and Regulations. Well, that is just fine and dandy, but can the HOA’s now change these rules midstream?

The amending of the CC…R’s after the purchase may be a challenge but apparently can be done. Although somewhat lengthy, be sure to review the CC…R’s carefully and take into consideration any potential long term consequences. This could affect your future investment strategies.

The Keys to Prospecting Success

 

Ever notice how difficult it is to start a project? Then once you start it, it easily becomes a creature of habit. Take for example an exercise program. We keep putting it off but once we start, we ask ourselves, “why didn’t do this earlier?” We seem to have the same mindset with proactive prospecting. We continue to find excuses not to prospect even though we know how productive and the positive results that will come from it. So why is it that we will make every excuse in the world not to do it?

We need to have a starting point. Begin by blocking out one or two hours per day to prospect. Yes, we have put it off long enough. Start by using your sphere of influence to prospect. Prospecting, like anything will require commitment and discipline. This time is yours and you are important. Once you start you will feel more important and this will be a positive projection of your attitude when you talk with your sphere of influence.

Know ahead of time exactly what you are going to say or discuss when you call someone. It is good to have a specific message. Most people are very interested in market conditions for example. Maybe they have misunderstood something in the news or need further explaining. This is where you can become the “expert”, and provide them with a more accurate image of the situation.

Sales have always been a “numbers” game. You want to touch as many people as possible. Defining your target market and being organized will help you obtain your goals.

I would highly suggest having a database of at least one month’s supply of names. The time allocated for prospecting should not be wasted looking up names or deciding at that moment who you are going to talk to next. Be prepared and watch how much more productive you will become.

Work in a private and quiet area so there are no disruptions. Do not answer calls from other clients or colleagues. Believe me, they will wait an hour or two for you to call them back. Remember, this is your time and will put you on the path to success. Get in the habit of doing this daily or at least every other day. As time progresses and with each call, your expertise will increase. The more we practice anything, the better we become.

When calling, decide on a time slot and try to stick with it. Maybe 8:00 AM – 9:00 AM, 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM or 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM. There will be customers that seem impossible to get a hold of. You will have to set aside another time of day and try to call those customers. We are all creatures of habit (Hint). They are probably in a routine between a certain timeframe, so you need to try and catch them at a different time or different day.

Be persistent. Be motivated. Be disciplined. These will be some of your best merits. Most quality contacts are made after the fifth call. Don’t stop or give up. Keep pursuing your dreams. Hard work and dedication will always lead to success.

With the current market, companies are always in completion for the best employees. Their “first impression” of you is just as important. Be professional, well-organized, receptive and courteous to their time and interests. Try to stay on schedule and do what you say you will do. If this could be a model employee we want them to stay with the company after we hire them.

If you have found a good candidate and decide they are perfect for job, it’s always a possibility they could turn down the offer. Don’t take it to heart. Definitely don’t take it personally. If the candidate turned down the position because of another opportunity, it is very likely they might realize a mistake has been made and reconsider. Continue to follow up with the individual as their reconsideration could be very favorable in the near future.

Another reason for being proactive in recruiting is even more important in the sales industry. Sales people are also hard to find and overstaffing might not be out of the question. This would be especially true in the real estate market. This will not only expand your team but give you an opportunity to replace a mediocre performer. Having trained real estate agents or sales professionals in reserve who understand the business could be vital to your company’s growth.

Management’s duty is to delegate responsibility. Recruiting is one area that might be better off left in the hands of management. Motivation is a word often used to describe having the energy to accomplish a task from start to finish. Motivation gets the marathon runner from the starting line to the finish line. But motivation requires a little more than just energy.

By one definition, discipline is an activity, exercise or regimen that develops or improves a skill. Motivation is defined as an inducement or incentive. These are two completely different meanings yet they seem to be very closely associated.

You are what we think about all day. If you impress your mind with negative and unfavorable thoughts, eventually, these beliefs are what we become. If you impress your mind with positive information and reiterate your action plan, these beliefs are what you will become.

The source of motivation is derived from a need or want. Whether it’s losing weight, quitting smoking, making more money or achieving balance in one’s life, the feeling must come from within you. It cannot be someone else’s idea or thought.

Sometimes we don’t know how we feel. We haven’t stopped to examine exactly who we are and more importantly, who we want to be for ourselves. We know who the boss, the kids and the family want us to be but too often we overlook making ourselves a priority.

After determining our motivation, we can then begin implementing discipline or a strategy to incorporate our motivation into reality. Remember, discipline is what will improve a skill or begin a new one. Discipline involves focus on your motivation and a plan to carry out your goal.

Every morning and every evening find a quiet place where you can spend a few minutes reviewing your motivational guide as well as yours beliefs and feelings about what you are trying to achieve. This is where the motivation comes to life. Reminding yourself several times a day exactly what your plan is and the reason for your plan will allow you to remain focused.

Motivation is a powerful and proven asset. It allows us to reward ourselves as we reach milestones within our lives. It permits us to center our attention on what we have set out to achieve. From these consistent thoughts and actions, we reach our desires and dreams.

Your Sphere of Influence is Your Road To Success

 

One of the reasons a sales position can be so lucrative is that one client can turn into many. How many sales people do you know followed up with you after they sold you something? Personally, if a sales person does not follow up with me, they usually won’t hear from me again. Could you imagine if you were to get one repeat customer a month how your sales could increase dramatically? By not touching base with your customers could have detrimental results.

The Eighty-Twenty Rule in sales usually signified 20% of the sales people did 80% of the business. This could also represent 80% of your business comes from 20% of your client resources. In other words, following up with your clients could generate 80% of your sales. This is true for repeat clients or referrals from these particular clients.

Providing outstanding service to your customers or clients does not guarantee you future business. If you don’t stay in contact with your clients after the sale, no matter how well you performed, it is almost a given they will forget you. So much holds true in the “Out of sight, out of mind” adage. If a client has a small problem with something, they most likely will not bother you with it. However, by following up with them first, and asking if everything is okay, can weigh heavily on your future sales. They might not be in the market for the product you are selling, but they have friends who could use your services.

In any sales venue, whether you are selling real estate, furniture or software, you need to ALWAYS reach out and follow-up with your clients AFTER the sale. I cannot even begin to count how many time someone has sold me something and I never heard from them again. If the sales people would have touched base with me, I’m sure I would have asked for their services again the next time I purchased something.

With advanced technology, there is no excuse for you NOT to reach out and touch your past clients. Some of the resources available for you to follow up with your clients are written thank you cards, birthday or anniversary cards, or periodic emails.

But let’s don’t forget the original phone call method. It has been around forever and is still the most powerful follow up tool to communicate with our customers and clients. A “Just called to see how you are” or “Just following up to see if you have any questions” can carry a long way with the client.

Many sales people perceive that “sales” are just a numbers game. Although there may be some truth to this, this perception will most likely eliminate that particular sales person from obtaining repeat business. I strongly believe from over 20 years experience in sales, that referral and repeat business is the foundation and strength of our future.

Add this “follow up with my sphere of influence” to your daily or weekly calendar. By doing so, you will see your sales increase significantly if not skyrocket to the top.

Are You Changing the Way You Conduct Business?

 

Since 2000 it seems that the American economy is changing in every which way. The mindset of the American people seems to be changing as well. We have seen fraud with major corporations, the uneasiness of the stock market, banks folding, bankruptcies escalating rapidly, and the housing market breaking records with foreclosures. We are awed and questioning the stability of our nation.

If employees aren’t getting laidoff, corporations are instituting hiring and spending freezes. The continued terrorist attacks and attempts has left an uneasiness in America. As business owners, employees and our customers are molding into a changed mindset. Our behavior is more conservative no matter what the geographic area or industry we are in. The American public are not making hasty decisions and are more conscience when it come time to make a financial decision whether small or large. As I converse with people every day, I continue to hear complaints but everyone seems to think doing nothing is “good enough” for the time being. Everyone is waiting for everything to “fix” itself.

Every action requires a reaction. There are many things we can’t change as individuals but we can monitor and control how we react to circumstances that confront us in our daily lives. As experienced salespeople, it is time to rise and meet these new challenges head-on. We already have the skills and knowledge required. Let’s embrace these traits and build them to our advantage.

Remember, success always awaits us. We need to trust and believe in ourselves and our surroundings and we will prosper. Yes, there will be struggles and challenges but with the right mindset we can overcome them. Customers are changing their beliefs and priorities but we can mold ourselves and be flexible with their wants and needs. We can control the way we do business. Below are a few examples of how we can grasp success for the long term:

Salespeople are always prospecting. We need more regularity to continue to fill the “pipeline”. This will help in securing our success in the future and a continuation of income. Cold calling customers have changed over the years and we can change with it just by being more aggressive in our creativity and consideration of others.

If we are talented and experienced with postcard prospecting, then increasing our volume and frequency might be the key. Email prospecting is becoming more and more popular and we can use this to our advantage as well. There are unlimited ways to obtain potential client contact lists. The most important strength of an email lies in the subject line. Be sure it’s powerful and catches the attention of the customer. You can touch many more customers through an email campaign quicker and usually less expensive than a postcard campaign. Alternating your campaigns and using a variety of both could be more beneficial.

Creating value in the customer’s mind is one of our primary responsibilities. What customers were willing to find acceptable in the past may not measure up to their current standard. This is the principle that U.S. automakers were slow to embrace and lost market share as a result. Let’s learn from their experience.

The business world is concerned with economic challenges and constantly changing rules. There is only one question we need to ask ourselves in reference to our roles: Is “good enough” really good enough?
